Instituto Inhotim in Brumadinho, Brazil, recently inaugurated nine permanent large-scale works by the artists Chris Burden, Doug Aitken, Edgard de Souza, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Jorge Macchi, Matthew Barney, Rivane Neuenschwander, Valeska Soares, and Yayoi Kusama. An essential part of the Jenny Holzer exhibition at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen / Basel in Switzerland is a series of projections in public space. Since 1996 Jenny Holzer has created light projections in public spaces around the world, at sites including the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris and the facade of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. This video documents the light projections onto Basel's City Hall (November 1, 2009), Basel's Cathedral (November 3, 2009), and the Swiss Railway Station (Bahnhof SBB, November 5, 2009). More info.

Jenny Holzer is considered as one of the most popular contemporary artists. Holzer is known for her use of words and ideas in public space. In 1982 she publicised her statements and aphorisms (”truisms”) on one of Times Square’s gigantic LED billboards, in 2008 she created a site-specific light projection for the newly renovated facade of the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, Switzerland, is now presenting Jenny Holzer’s first large sale exhibition in a Swiss museum. At 9 a.m. on Wednesday 14th October 2009, the last participant of British artist Antony Gormley's One & Other project, Emma Burns, stepped onto the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. The 30 year old medical photographer from Darlington is one of 2,400 people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and from all over the UK which have participated in this unique piece of art. They have travelled from as far afield as Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands to Belfast, Northern Ireland to be part of this collective portrait of the UK of 2009. One & Other has seen a different person take their place on the Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days. The project has been commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts, and supported by Arts Council England. More info.

As every year, Deutsche Bank is presenting an exhibition at their VIP Lounge at Frieze Art Fair. This year, the show is dedicated to the work of German photographer Thomas Struth. Deutsche Bank has over fifty of Struth's earlier works in its collection. Many of them examine the 50s and 60s German city developments of the Wirtschaftswunder. The works presented at Frieze are photographs of forests, depicting an abundance of growing trees, creepers and plants of all descriptions. More info.

As the tenth work in Tate Modern's annual series of Unilever commissions, Polish artist Miroslaw Balka installed a enormous steel container filled with – darkness. The sculpture, called How It Is is 30 meters long, 10 meters wide and 13 meters high and completely dark inside. The interior walls of the steel chamber are lined with a soft flock that is 10 times blacker than normal black paint.

The Mayor Synagogue in Istanbul’s Hasköy district is a very special place. The historic synagogue is hundreds of years old. Today, it is used as storage facility, and houses a workshop and a billiard saloon. That’s what the Romanian-born installation artist Serge Spitzer found fascinating about the place. Serge Spitzer has created a site-specific installation at the Mayor Synagogue, titled “Molecular Istanbul“. In one of the rooms he arranged a vast number of marbles on the floor while in the other rooms the craftsmen do their work. More info.

Among the participants of Utopics, the 11th Swiss Sculpture Exhibition in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, are the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV). The Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland were proclaimed in 1992 and consist of all Border Territories: Geographical, Mental & Digital. For Utopics, the kings Carl Michael von Hausswolff of Vargaland and Leif Elggren of Elgaland annexed the language boundary in Biel/Bienne. Biel/Bienne is bilingual, a French and German speaking city, called Biel in German and Bienne in French. To announce the assimilation of the language boundary, the Jugenorchester (youth orchestra) Biel/Bienne performed the national anthem of the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland.

Mircea Cantor: Tracking Happiness at Kunsthaus Zürich is Switzerland's first solo show of works of Romanian artist Mircea Cantor. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a film created especially for the exhibition, Tracking Happiness. The video features a group of women clad in white sashaying in various formations barefoot across fine white sand. Their traces are wiped away by their broom-wielding successors. In this film, Mircea Cantor examines the paradox of an age in which traces are perpetually left and deleted.More info.

As part of the “Art Walk” of the St. Moritz Art Masters, there’s an installation of “Kandor” videos by American artist Mike Kelley. Kandor is the capitol of comic book hero Superman’s home planet Krypton. According to the Superman myth, Kandor is the only remnant of the exploded planet and the city is preserved – in a reduced state – in a bottle in Superman’s possession. The Kandor series comprises sculptures (bell jars with the miniature version of Kandor), lenticular lightboxes, and videos (previously shown at Jablonka Gallery, Berlin). More info.

rAndom International is a London-based collective set up in 2002 by Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch. Their work explores the conflict between reinterpreting the cold nature of digital and the often hands-on approach of analogue. KölnSkulptur 5 – Reality Check ist the fifth exhibition of outdoor sculpture at the Skulpturenpark Köln. KölnSkulptur 5 has been curated by Managing and Artistic Director Dr. Renate Goldmann and presents 17 new works to the public. Among the works is Dirk Skreber’s Reaktor, a hole with a car inside that seemingly collided with a steel bar. Dirk Skreber was born in Lübeck, Germany, in 1961. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the teacher Alfonso Hüppi. Skreber lives and works in New York. He works in sculpture, installation and painting. Car crashes and natural disasters are often the subject matter of his work. “Still resonating with the acceleration of the car and the impact of the collision, the deformed construct evokes an image of gruesome beauty. In 1909, the first Futurist Manifesto celebrated “The Beauty of Speed”. Exactly one hundred years later Dirk Skreber (* 1961) exhibits a car wreck, which as a metaphor of destruction can be read as a demonstration of the resurgence of energy through speed and of the cathartic impact of destruction itself. Indeed, it could serve as an early 21st century response to the stated aims of the Futurists. Yet the work also elicits a positive response from the visitor: Below in the hole, the human body is exposed to the full energy field of the Reaktor (in which the production energy, the velocity energy and the deformation energy are stored). Since 2000 he has been working solo while simultaneously continuing his activity with the group. He lives and works in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. Currently Robert Stadler is taking part in the exhibition Design High at Louise Blouin Foundation in London. In Venice, she presents three video installations: Disorient (2009), a new video installation that draws on the city's medieval influence before the discovery of new routes to Asia diminished its power; Provenance (2008), a research on 17th-century, "Golden Age" portrait paintings; and Rise and Fall (2009), a video installation that focuses on images of water - turbulent, churning as well as slow-moving and placid - as a metaphor for how memory is formed. Design studio DRIFT was founded by Ralph Nauta (born 1978) and Lonneke Gordijn (1980), both graduates from Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. At Design Miami Basel and the exhibition Design High at Louise Blouin Foundation in London they presented their modular light object Fragile Future. Fragile Future 3.4 is an installation consistent of modules that combine an electronical system with LED lights and real dandelions. Fragile Future was awarded the price Light of the Future by the German Design Council in 2008. Global Street Food is the latest project by German designer / creative director / curator / artist Mike Meiré. At Vitra's Art Basel Party we had the opportunity to have a look at Global Street Food and spoke with Mike Meiré and Andreas Dornbracht of kitchen and bathroom brand Dornbracht. Global Street Food is part of Dornbracht's Edges series of cultural projects and in a way the successor of Mike Meiré's Farm Project for the same series. Global Street Food had its debut during imm Cologne 2009. It basically is an exhibition of street kitchens collected from around the world. Among them: a cheese and sausage stand from Buenos Aires, a chopping block from Hong Kong, China, a fruit and vegetable stand from Rundu, Namibia, a terracotta chicken grill from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and many others. In this video, Joep van Lieshout talks about his work between the poles of art and design, and his current and upcoming projects. Joep van Lieshout (born 1963 in Ravenstein, Netherlands) is the founder of Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL). He lives and works in Rotterdam since 1987. He studied at the Acacemy of Modern Art, Rotterdam. Since 1995, AVL creates work in the realm of installation, design, furniture and architecture. The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasises the fact that the works of art do not stem solely from the creative brain of Joep van Lieshout, but are produced by a creative team of artists, designers and architects. Miquel Barceló represents Spain at the 53rd Venice Biennale 2009. On display is a series of large format paintings surveying Miquel Barceló’s work from 2000 to the present. The exhibition also features a group of ceramics. The most recent works come from the same time as when the Miquel Barceló was creating the dome at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. Miquel Barceló placed a number of canvases on the floor, which were randomly covered by the paint dripping from the ceiling. These canvases were used as backgrounds for the new paintings that address three major subjects: primates, African landscapes and sea foam.

Miwa Yanagi represents Japan at the 53rd Venice Biennale with her installation entitled Windswept Women: The Old Girls' Troupe. For this work, Yanagi takes the Japanese Pavilion, built in 1956 and designed by Takamasa Yoshizaka and covers its exterior with a black, membrane-like tent. Inside, Miwa Yanagi installs giant 4m high photograph stands containing portraits of women of varied ages. The photographs are presented in ornately designed decorative frames. The women stand unmoved despite being surrounded by turbulent wind and the scenery is surreal. In addition to the photographs, Miwa Yanagi presents a new video work.

Antony Gormley currently is in the media because of his work One and Other, a work conceived for the Fourth Plinth on the northwest corner of Trafalgar Square. Turkish artist duo mentalKLINIK's installation PuFF reminds of a boxing ring with little black robots fighting against themselves and the glitter that is sprayed on the floor of the ring. The installation PuFF attempts to create an unidentified space, an indecisive zone of repetition replete with the absurdity of a floor, which is continually filled with glitter only so that it can be continually vacuumed.
