Watch Episode 5, extended excerpts from "Dancing With The Wind" and "Distant Shores: Plomari" now on-line at Sailing Channel Theater. TheSailingChannel.TV's new one-hour sailing TV Show is produced for New York Public TV station WLIW21. The series airs each Sunday on WLIW21 at 1PM Eastern.

The first half-hour of Episode 5 features extended excerpts from Ed Verner's video ode to the romance of sail, "Dancing With The Wind." As host Tory Salvia and his son, Jon, prepare their family boat for a sail, Tory introduces a unique sailing video that combines music and poetry to express the joy and wonder of sailing. A classic sailboat, a fresh breeze, a willing crew and the sun sparkling off the Florida water. Add an original musical score, words of inspiration, and voila! - you have Ed Verner's "Dancing With The Wind." This unique video tells the story of a 2-day cruise along Florida&#8217;s central Gulf coast. The boat is Wind Ketcher, a classic Tom Gilmer-designed, 1976 Allied Seawind ketch with an Atlantic crossing under her keel. Her skipper is Ed Verner, a professional composer and musician. Wind Ketcher glistens and gleams across the waves, dancing with the wind to Ed's melodies. Poetic narrative and gorgeous photography will have you tasting the salt spray. During the voyage, we sail through fair weather and squalls with Ed's music and words matching the moods of the sea. Returning to port in the golden glow of a Florida sunset, Ed's dance with the wind ends, but his video will leave you yearning for more. You can purchase the unabridged version of "Dancing With The Wind" at TheSailingChannel.TV/dwtw.

For the second half-hour, host Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode five, the Shards complete their Aegean sailing adventure by exploring the island of Lesvos. They travel to the town of Plomari where they encounter many traditional festivals celebrating the heritage of the region. Plomari is the capital of ouzo, and the Shards arrive on the first day of the Annual Ouzo Festival where for four nights in July there is feasting, regional music, and free ouzo provided by the local distilleries. Paul and Sheryl end their visit by attending the Annual Horse Festival where local riders parade through town and display their riding skills in a unique dance competition at the waterfront. You can purchase the two-volume DVD set of Distant Shores: Greek Islands &amp; Turkey at TheSailingChannel.TV/distant_shores.

If we can generate a positive audience vibe from the sailing community and get that message to TV station managers, this will go a long way in encouraging PBS to air more sailing programs. Watch Episode 4, extended excerpts from "Cruising with Bettie: L.A. to the Bahamas" and "Distant Shores: Mytilini" now on-line at Sailing Channel Theater. TheSailingChannel.TV's new one-hour sailing TV Show is produced for New York Public TV station WLIW21. The series airs each Sunday on WLIW21 at 1PM Eastern.

The first half-hour of Episode 4 features extended excerpts from Robert Steadman's cruising lifestyle documentary, "Cruising with Bettie: L.A. to the Bahamas." While arriving for a visit to the port of Annapolis, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay, show host Tory Saliva introduces extended excerpts from Hollywood cinematographer Bob Steadman's cruising lifestyle documentary, "Cruising with Bettie: L.A. Bahamas. When you're a Hollywood cameraman and sailor, hopefully the two skills will meet. When Robert Steadman retired from feature-film gigs like James Bond, Blue Lagoon, and Treasure Island, he finally cast off the lines of his 1978, Cascade 36 cutter, "Bettie," with no return date on the calendar. Luckily for us, Bob just couldn't leave his camera at the dock. The result is "Cruising with Bettie: L.A. to the Bahamas," a first hand look at the cruising lifestyle. Joining Bob is Kaye Nottbusch, a Hollywood custom designer turned canvas maker and sail mender. Together, the couple take us on a fast paced cruise down the west coast of Mexico, Central America, and through the Panama Canal with many interesting stops along the way. Once in the Caribbean, Bob and Kaye cruise up a jungle river, explore a reef-bound wreck, avert near disaster at an anchorage, Hookah dive in pristine waters, and enjoy a classic Bahamian sailing regatta. You can purchase the unabridged version of "Cruising with Bettie" at TheSailingChannel.TV/CWB.

For the second half-hour, host Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode four, the Shards make landfall in Greece on the island of Lesvos, home of the Muses and poetess, Sappho. They visit the island's two gulfs of Kalloni and Yeras, home to delicious sardines and olive oil. They visit the Mylelia water mill, where these two products are still produced in the traditional style. The Shards take a tour of the local church's catacombs at Skopelos, and finally they participate in the Festival of Ay Marina. You can purchase the two-volume DVD set of Distant Shores: Greek Islands &amp; Turkey at TheSailingChannel.TV/distant_shores.

      <description>

Watch Episode 2, "ZACA," now on-line at Sailing Channel Theater. TheSailingChannel.TV's new one-hour sailing TV Show is produced for New York Public TV station WLIW21. The series airs each Sunday on WLIW21 at 1PM Eastern.

The first half-hour of Episode 2 features extended excerpts from Luther Greene's latest documentary, "In the Wake of the ZACA." Tory Salvia, President of The Sailing Channel and Host for Sailing Channel Theater, introduces the story of this classic 75 year-old, 118 foot gaff rigged topsail schooner that captures a lost age of adventure, romance, and Hollywood glamor. Launched in San Francisco on the eve of the great depression, Zaca explored stone-age civilizations in the South Pacific, patrolled the California coast as an armed ship of war during World War II, and served as party boat for sailor and swashbuckling actor Errol Flynn. Left to languish as a striped hulk on a mud flat in the south of France, Zaca rose like the phoenix to sail again. You can purchase the unabridged version of ZACA at TheSailingChannel.TV.

In the second half-hour, Host, Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode two, we join the Shards aboard their Classic 37 sloop, "Two Step," as they voyage north along the Turkish coast. The Shards sail up the Dardanelles, stop at the Gallipoli War Memorial, and encounter a squall in the Sea of Marmara. Arriving at Istanbul, Two Step sails past famous monuments en-route to the Shard's base for exploring the old city. You can purchase the two-volume DVD set of Distant Shores: Greek Islands &amp; Turkey at TheSailingChannel.TV/store.

      <description>

TheSailingChannel.TV's one-hour sailing series, Sailing Channel Theater, premiers on New York Public TV station WLIW21 this Sunday, July 5, at 1pm EDT. The series will run through Sept 6 with an option to renew and be presented to APT for national PBS distribution.

Located on Long Island, WLIW21 is the third most watched PBS station in the US and sister station to WNET13. The station covers the largest sailing grounds in the United States encompassing New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut.

You can also view SCT Ep1 on-line at www.wliw.org/sailing and www.thesailingchannel.tv/sct.

In the premier episode, the first half-hour features extended excerpts from Lin and Larry Pardey's latest documentary, "Cruising Has NO LIMITS." Tory Salvia, President of The Sailing Channel and Host for Sailing Channel Theater, introduces the world renowned cruising couple. This remarkable film shows Lin and Larry skimming before caressing trade winds, savoring tropical landfalls, and evading stormy seas. But their stories of ocean voyaging are much richer than the typical image of the cruising life under sail. We join the documentary in the Indian Ocean as the Pardey's, on board their 29-foot, 9-inch engineless wooden cutter Taleisin, close in on the southern tip of Africa for the first of three incredible adventures. Once safely ashore, Lin and Larry plan and execute a seven month &#8220;Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget,&#8221; outfitting a 4X4 to reach remote corners of southern Africa. During their two-year stay, they cover more than 12,000 miles enjoying campfire evenings with Kalahari Bushmen and days of animal-watching at waterholes far from game reserves. Next the Pardey's set sail across the Atlantic to Brazil and some incredible island cruising south of Rio. During this second adventure, we see how two 14-year-old passengers lead them into a unique, eight-month-long island encounter with several Brazilian families who dream of their own off shore adventures. Finally, the Pardey's voyage north to Ireland&#8217;s music-filled shores where they enjoy a summer of history, classic sailing, Irish music, and new friendships. Cruising Has NO LIMITS is a treat for both seasoned sailors and those who just dream of visiting different cultures under sail.

The second half-hour, Host, Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode one, we join the Shards aboard their Classic 37 sloop, "Two Step," as they explore the West Coast of Turkey. The Shards voyage north viewing ancient ruins and olive groves along the way. They take a Turkish bath in a natural hot spring "hamam" along the shore and visit a town on an inland lake. A trip to a barber becomes an enlightening experience when Paul discovers that Turkish barbers use flames as well as razors when he goes for a shave.

If sailing community can generate a positive audience vibe and get that message to TV station managers, this will go a long way in encouraging PBS to air more of our sailing programs in the future. Help us create more quality sailing television by telling WLIW how much you enjoy Sailing Channel Theater. <description>TheSailingChannel brings you an in-depth look at the Dufour 525 grand 'Large, the flagship of the Dufour fleet, winner of Cruising World Magazine's Best Full-Size Cruiser award for 2009. At 52.5 feet length overall, the 525 combines sleek, elegant European styling by French and Italian designers with stiff, strong construction making her a safe and fast blue water cruiser. The topsides feature a low coach roof, uncluttered teak decks, dual wheels, a German mainsheeting system operated at the helm, wide transom, and electrically operated swim platform. Below decks, the mood is light and airy with a mix of mahogany and lighter textures illuminated by multiple ports and hatches. The owner can choose from 8 different layouts that include three to five cabins with either a longitudinal or u-shaped galley. On the water, a deep V'd hull design delivers a favorable compromise between sea kindliness and speed while electric winches let the crew trim the sails with the touch of a button. Winner of Cruising World Magazine's Best Full-Size Cruiser for 2009, the Dufour 525 is a sleek, classy vessel that can transport it's crew in safety and comfort anywhere its skipper chooses to sail.

      <title>Cruising has NO LIMITS: Irish Interlude</title>
      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/30581</link>
      <description>TheSailingChannel presents "Irish Interlude," a sneak-peek from Lin and Larry Pardey's newest 74-minute documentary, Cruising has NO LIMITS. Available at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/chnl

 Cruising has NO LIMITS DVD (74-minutes)
$22.95.

Starting at their New Zealand home base, the Pardeys recount some of their most memorable adventures during more than 30 years of cruising. They begin by taking you across the Indian Ocean on board their 29-foot, 9-inch engineless cutter, Taleisin: destination, southern Africa. There, you follow Lin and Larry as they plan and execute a seven month &#8220;Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget&#8221;. After outfitting a 4X4, you travel into the remote Kalahari, experience life at a sculptors&#8217; commune in northern Zimbabwe, and animal-watch at waterholes far from game reserves. Next you cross the south Atlantic to Brazil's off-shore islands where Lin and Larry experience a unique, eight-month-long encounter with nine Brazilian families who dream of their own blue water adventures. Finally, you sail north to Ireland&#8217;s music-filled shores and a summer of history, classic sailing, and friendship.

Along the way, you&#8217;ll learn some of the truisms that could help you get out adventuring sooner and more enjoyably&#8212;whether on the water or on land. You&#8217;ll also come to know more about this longtime cruising couple who have been dubbed &#8220;the enablers&#8221; because of their enthusiasm and willingness to share their secrets for exploring the far corners of the world on a limited budget.

&#8220;After voyaging tens of thousands of engineless miles under sail, penning more useful marine books than Hiscock and Moitessier combined, and receiving more awards for their pursuits than Tom Hanks has for his, Lin and Larry Pardey are entitled to their well-earned nautical opinions.&#8221;

      <title>Cruising with Bettie Trailer: L.A. to the Bahamas</title>
      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/30582</link>
      <description>TheSailingChannel presents a slice of the cruising lifestyle. Have you ever dreamt of "sailing off into the sunset?" Then join Bob and Kaye aboard their 36 foot sloop, "Bettie" as they cruise from Los Angeles to the Bahamas via the Panama Canal on the first leg of their sailing adventure

"Bettie" is based on a Cascade 36 hull. It was custom molded for Bob by Yacht Constructors in Portland Oregon back in 1978. Four years and lots and lots of man hours later Bob splashed her. "Bettie" has a raised freeboard that allows for a flush deck design.

This is a fast-paced documentary, with gorgeous photography, that will give you a first hand look at the cruising lifestyle. Over 10,000 miles have passed under Bettie&#8217;s keel since Bob and Kaye left Los Angeles in 2004. They sailed down the west coast to Panama, through the Canal, east to Cartagena, Columbia then north to Honduras and east across the Caribbean to the Bahamas. That's the focus of this video.

Next, Bob and Kaye cruised north along the eastern U.S. seaboard to Boston. The geese were flying south by October beckoning them back to warmer climes, so they headed south to Guatemala and Honduras. After refitting and some time back in L.A., Bob and Kaye sailed back across the Caribbean to the Florida Keys. TheSailingChannel is partnering with Bob and Kaye to produce a continuing series of cruising documentaries as we follow "Bettie" to the far corners of the world.

Bob Steadman is a highly acclaimed Hollywood cinematographer. He recently served as technical consultant to the Director of Photography on the feature, Body of Lies directed by Ridley Scott and starring Leonardo de Caprio and Russell Crowe. Read all about it in Bob's Blog and check out Bob Steadman's screen credits on the Internet Movie Database.

      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/30583</link>
      <description>TheSailingChannel is honored to offer what many consider to be the finest sailing film ever made: With Jean-du-Sud Around the World. A Film by Yves G&#233;linas. Twice winner of the Palme d'Or at the Larochelle Sailing Film Festival (for Part One in 1983 and Part Two in &#8217;85) and of 8 awards in other festivals, Jean-du-Sud celebrates the filmmaker's 28,000 mile, single-handed&#160;circumnavigation through the roaring forties and around Cape Horn&#160;aboard his Alberg 30 sloop.

Shot in 16-mm film with sync sound, Jean-du-Sud puts you in the cockpit: Yves speaks as he would to a fellow crew member. Unless you do it yourself, this is as close as you'll ever get to a solo circumnavigation. In attempting to sail non&#8211;stop between Saint-Malo, France and Gasp&#233;, QC, Canada through the Roaring Forties and around Cape Horn alone aboard his boat, Jean-du-Sud, Canadian Yves G&#233;linas added his personal share to the art of sailing a small boat around the world. Besides the voyage, his accomplishments included the design of a system to self-steer his boat, the writing of a book to document the voyage, and the shooting of a 16 mm film while sailing. Even though Yves was unable to complete the circumnavigation non-stop, Jean-du-Sud was the smallest boat up to that time to sail that route. In acknowledgement, the Joshua Slocum Society International bestowed on G&#233;linas the Golden Circle Award.

"I had a lot of time to meditate &#8211; the phone did not ring often &#8211; but I must say I haven&#8217;t had any great revelations, I did not experience nirvana or samadhi. Yet I have known many moments of total contentment : ends of days when the sun dove into the sea splashing half the sky with warm light...The trade wind caressing naked skin (it is almost as good as if it came from a loved one)&#8230;The simple pleasure of watching the bow of my boat slice through the surface of the sea, pushed, but also guided by an invisible force : the magic of the wind&#8230;." Yves G&#233;linas

      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/58707</link>
      <description>TheSailingChannel.TV previews Lin and Larry Pardey's Storm Tactics: Cape Horn Tested. This 84 minute video delivers the skills you need to weather storms with confidence. If you like the preview, buy the DVD. It's the next best thing to having Lin and Larry Pardey onboard, coaching you on storm tactics as the seas build and the rigging howls. Purchase the Storm Tactics video and the recently revised companion 256 page Handbook 3rd Ed. at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics. DVD or VHS: $29.95; HandBook, 3rd Ed. available early April 2008: prepublication: $19.95; post-publication: $22.95; DVD/Handbook Combo: $39.95.

Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world's most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. "... I wanted to show how the sailor's safety valve--heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It's hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves...." - Larry Pardey.

"One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled," Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. Read more about Storm tactics at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics/about_storm_tactics.htm

Add the Storm Tactics Handbook, 3rd Ed. to the Video and you've got the ultimate reference set. Just revised, the 3rd Edition will be available early April 2008. Take advantage of pre-publication pricing: just $19.95. Post publication price: $22.95. Modern methods of heaving-to for survival in extreme conditions. As in the first two editions of this book, Lin and Larry describe their concerns about the tendency of modern sailors to discard the classic methods used to bring sailing vessels of all sizes&#8212;from vast clipper ships to tiny yachts&#8212;through amazingly strong winds and heavy seas. &#8220;There is only one storm tactic that has the ability to sap the power of breaking seas,&#8221; they explain. With clear and concise diagrams, they proceed to show how heaving-to works and how even the most modern of yachts can be made to heave-to, whether with only sail power or with the assistance of a sea anchor. http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/pardey_books/books/storm_tactics_handbook.htm

Mario Vittone, a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer for 14 years, in an unsolicited testimony, wrote: &#8220;I have been on several rescues (and heard of many more) that would have been completely unnecessary if the sailboat captains aboard would have . . . practiced the skills taught by Lin and Larry Pardey. Not knowing how to heave-to in bad weather is as inexcusable as not knowing &#8216;red, right, return&#8217;.&#8221;

      <title>VirtualSailboatShow: True Wind</title>
      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/30585</link>
      <description> At the United States Sailboat Show, TheSailingChannel.TV's Joe Duley interviews Roger Marquis of True Wind, makers of a unique line of premium sailcloth duffle and gear bags. We really like the quality of the True Wind bags. Nothing like the feel of brand new sailcloth! And the finishing is top-notch. In fact, we like their gear so much we decided to sell it on our site at www.TheSailingChannel.TV/store/gear

About True Wind Sailcloth... The Dacron&#174; sailcloth found in True Wind bags is custom-woven in Ireland by Hood Sailmakers, one of the world&#8217;s leading sailcloth manufacturers and sail designers. Founded in the 1950&#8217;s by the legendary Ted Hood, Hood Sailmakers pioneered the use of Dacron&#174; for sail making, and has been at the forefront of sailcloth manufacturing ever since.

Strong, durable and resistant to sunlight, abrasion and water, Dacron&#174; is an ideal fabric for soft-sided bags, and the sailcloth found in True Wind products is the very same cloth that is used to power some of the largest and most prestigious racing, cruising and classic yachts in the world.

Another distinguishing feature of True Wind sailcloth is that it is new, not recycled, refurbished, seconds or scraps. By using new sailcloth, True Wind is better able to control the overall quality of the fabric, especially as it relates to its color, weave and finish. Crisp and bright in texture and appearance, the sailcloth in a True Wind bag will take on a patina over time and soften with use.

Handcrafted in the U.S.A., True Wind bags feature superior craftsmanship, original design, and come in a wide range of colors. Styles include Navigator Duffles, Classic Totes, Regatta Totes, Sailor Bags, and Ditty Bags. If you see one you like, just click a photo, a link, or visit www.thesailingchannel.tv/store/gear

      <title>A New Voyage Round The World - Book Review</title>
      <link>http://vodcast.gmx.net/channel/view/343-thesailingchannel-tv/30586</link>
      <description>TheSailingChannel.TV uses historic images and classical music to bring to life its review of A New Voyage Round The World by William Dampier. First published in 1697, a new edition from 1500 Books makes this little known classic available to the modern reader.

Providing the inspiration for such works as Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, William Dampier (1652 - 1715) was the forefather of the English narrative. Pirate, explorer and naturalist, Dampier provides one of the earliest and most eloquent accounts of discovery and piracy on the high seas with keen observations of people, places, and nature. Dampier circled the globe three times, wrote of the wildlife and flora of the Galapagos 150 years before Darwin, visited Australia close to 80 years before Cook, and his innovations in navigational technology were studied by Cook and Nelson.

Filled with accounts of privateering exploits as well as the first detailed descriptions of plants and animals ever recorded by an Englishmen, A New Voyage Round the World provides a rare and exciting glimpse into life on the ocean at a time when a true map of the world did not yet exist. Features an introduction by Kris Lane, College of William and Mary.

This unique music video tells the story of a 2-day cruise along Florida&#8217;s central Gulf coast that captures the romance and pure joy of sailing&#8212;without a word spoken. The boat is Wind Ketcher, a classic, Tom Gilmer-designed, 1976 Allied Seawind ketch with an Atlantic crossing under her keel. A blue water beauty, Wind Ketcher glistens and gleams across the waves, dancing with the wind to the melodies composed and performed by her skipper, professional musician, Ed Verner. Award-winning cinematographer, Steve Seckar captures the sailing from on board, the sky above. the sea and just about every angle in-between. Over the course of the voyage, we sail through fair weather and squalls, the music matching the moods of the sea on each tack. Returning to port in the golden glow of a Florida sunset, our dance with the wind ends but the video leaves us yearning for more.

      <description>TheSailingChannel presents a new mini-documentary by our partner, SailTV.

Shosholoza: An African Dream captures the new spirit of South Africa through the drama and excitement of an America's Cup challenge sponsored by T-Systems. Behind the scenes is the Izivunguvungu Sailing School, a non-profit founded in 1997 by SA Olympic sailor Ian Ainslie. The school teaches disadvantaged youth life skills through sail training. Part of the MSC Foundation, the school's key benefactor is Captain Salvatore Sarno who also serves as the Managing Director of Team Shosholoza. Assisting with the youth sailing program is the South African Navy. Together, their efforts are changing the lives of the poorest of South Africa's children: instilling pride through the discipline of sailing and national identity through positive role models, black and white, crewing aboard Team Shosholoza. Bowman, Golden Mgedeza and other Team Shosholoza crewmembers have become new heroes for children who are turning away from crime, returning to school, and embracing sailing as a way to give new meaning to their lives.
